The Samples Behind Capone-N-Noreaga’s ‘The War Report’

The War Report

Power 106‘s Wax Only series is back to examine Capone-N-Noreaga’s gritty debut album, The War Report. The project, which was released 20 years ago on Saturday, is considered an East Coast hip-hop classic.

The War Report included production from legends like Marley Marl, Lord Finesse, Buckwild, and DJ Clark Kent. It contained the singles “L.A. L.A.,” “T.O.N.Y. (Top of New York),” “Illegal Life,” and “Closer.” (“L.A., L.A.” was in response to Tha Dogg Pound’s 1995 track, “New York, New York.”)

Despite not having a hit single, The War Report was a commercial success. It peaked at No. 21 on the Billboard 200 and No. 4 on their Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, making it the pair’s highest-charting album to date.

Watch P-Lo Make a Beat by Sampling Random Records

P-Lo

Bay Area producer and rapper P-Lo was recently featured on Mass Appeal’s Rhythm Roulette.

The series challenges producers to make a beat by sampling three random records, chosen from a record store while blindfolded.

After picking up some vinyl at New York City’s A1 Records, P-Lo headed to the studio. The process started off slow, but he ended up delivering a bouncy track, which he classified as a “collar popper.”

Born in Pinole, California, P-Lo rose to prominence in 2013 after producing the singles “Act Right” for Yo Gotti and “Bout Me” for Wiz Khalifa. In 2008, he co-founded the HBK Gang, a collective whose members include Kehlani, Sage The Gemini, and IamSu. His recent album, More Than Anything, features tracks with E-40 and G-Eazy.

Review: Technics SL-1200GR Turntable

Technics SL-1200GR

Back in January, Technics unveiled a new model in their famed SL-1200 turntable series, the SL-1200GR. The device is essentially a more affordable version of their SL-1200G, which was believed to be aimed at audiophiles instead of DJs. (Technics didn’t mention DJs in any of their product and marketing material for the G.)

However, the company clarified their commitment to DJs when they announced the GR.

“The SL-1200GR and SL-1210GR combine the best of both worlds,” Michiko Ogawa, director of Technics at Panasonic, said in a press release. “Our goal was to extend our top range for audio enthusiasts as well as professional DJs.”

Technics’ statement was reassuring, but does the GR actually make sense for DJing? Mojaxx finds out on this week’s Tips and Tricks.

Special thanks to Westend DJ.
