DJ Dwells, the 2014 DMC New York City Regional Champion, has returned with a turntablist routine featuring Flume’s latest single, “Some Minds.”

The Connecticut native was only 13 when he won the competition, making him the youngest DJ to do so. The 15-year-old has since been featured on ABC News and other notable outlets.

DJ Dwells & Scratch DJ Academy Featured on ABC News

Most stories about the rise of DJing usually focus on EDM superstars and the massive venues they play at. However, ABC News recently took a break from the fist-pumping to shed light on two turntablists.

As part of their story, ABC visited the world-renowned Scratch DJ Academy in New York City to speak with former student DJ Dwells, a 14-year-old who made waves in 2014 after winning the region’s DMC championship. ABC also spoke with instructor Dirty Digits.

While Dwells and Digits are only a fraction of the turntablist scene, it’s great to see DJs like them get shine on a major news network. A win for the “Real DJing” movement? We think so.

DJ Dwells & DJ Esquire Trade Insults in Humorous Interview

This year’s DMC New York City Champion, DJ Dwells, and two-time DMC USA Champion, DJ Esquire, recently interviewed each other at Scratch DJ Academy. However, what began as a civil discussion between two talented DJs quickly devolved into a back-and-forth session of backhanded insults. We assume that both DJs respect each other and the questions were probably planned in advance but the video is pretty funny nevertheless.

Last week, a young turntablist named DJ Dwells took second place at the 2014 DMC US Finals in New York City — an impressive accomplishment considering he’s only 13 years old.

However, the youngster’s break-out moment came earlier this year in February when he won the New York City Regional. Almost immediately, people in the turntablist community compared Dwells with A-Trak — who also gained fame at a young age when he won the 1997 DMC World Finals.

The hype surrounding Dwells was followed by notable interviews that revealed details about the relatively unknown DJ but still left many wondering what his performance sounded like.

Nearly seven months after winning the regional title, Dwell’s set has finally been uploaded to DMC’s YouTube channel along with those of the other contenders. Watch his full eight-and-a-half minute performance below:
