Grammy-nominated producer Phonix Beats has explained how he made J. Cole‘s 2014 hit “No Role Modelz” on a new episode of Genius’ Deconstructed. The single, which has been certified platinum, peaked at No. 36 on Billboard’s Hot 100. It’s the highest-charting single from Cole’s standout album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive.

In the video, Phonix Beats recalls how he got connected with J. Cole then breaks down his process of making the track in Reason.

Phonix Beats is a veteran producer of 10 years who has worked with the likes of 50 Cent, Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Jeremih, and Trey Songz. He most recently worked with The Game and Bryson Tiller.

Below is DJcity’s chart of the top 30 most downloaded Latin songs of the year. The list was determined by subscriber downloads (the tracks are not DJcity’s picks).

Puerto Rican superstar Ozuna led the way in 2018 with seven appearances on the list. Coming in at second with six tracks was J Balvin while Bad Bunny and Nicky Jam tied for third with five each. Some of DJcity’s in-house music team members also made this list. DJ Refresh scored four edits on the list followed by Kidd Spin and ETX with two apiece.

DJcity in-house producer DJ Refresh had a breakout year in 2018. Close to a dozen of his edits and remixes appeared on DJcity’s monthly Top 50 charts and his work was also regularly featured on the Trends lists.

Now, Refresh returns with an energetic cumbia remix of legendary Mexican group Los Ángeles Azules‘ 2014 hit, “Toma Que Toma.” The San Diego native maintains the original horns and vocals while adding a new instrumental and chopped-up drop.
