Skratch Bastid Defends ‘Fake DJing’ Disqualification

Skratch Basti

DJcity has reached out to Thre3style judge Skratch Bastid for his take on G Smooth’s latest public statement and video addressing the controversy that stripped him of his 2016 Australian Thre3style title last week:

G Smooth was disqualified from the competition after Thre3style judges determined much of his set was pre-recorded. In a lengthy Facebook post, Smooth asserted:

“On the night of the Australian Red Bull Thre3style championship on July 1, 2016 at Boney, my set was NOT pre-recorded. I performed my set LIVE.”

Smooth followed his post with a FB Live video showing him perform the would-be winning set in it’s entirety.

Red Bull Thre3style has stripped G Smooth of the 2016 Australian title and awarded it to Beast Mode, who came in second place at the July 2 competition. The announcement was posted to Thre3style’s Facebook page on Wednesday.

The decision follows widespread allegations that G Smooth faked his winning performance at the Australia Final by using a pre-recorded routine. The accusations stemmed from a video of G Smooth’s set, which was brought to light on Tuesday by Vekked. The reigning DMC World Champion and DMC Online Champion claimed there were numerous irregularities throughout the performance, citing specific examples.

Red Bull said in the statement that it came to the decision to revoke G Smooth’s title “after thorough review by our panel of judges and feedback from all involved parties.”

Thre3style judge Skratch Bastid added: “Red Bull Thre3Style strives to provide a stage for DJs to be creative, perform their best, and share their talents with music fans all around the world. As DJs we have the responsibility to adhere to an unwritten code of ethics led by the guiding principle that you need to take risk in your sets by doing it live. We take situations like this very seriously and consider this the only fair action to take given the circumstances.”

Beast Mode will now represent Australia at the Thre3style World Final in Santiago, Chile.

How to Take Your Tone Playing to the Next Level

69Beats

Poland’s DJ 69Beats has made a tutorial that explains how to perform advanced tone play routines with Traktor and a piano-like controller. Fans had asked him to shed light on the technique after he won the Red Bull Thre3style Poland Finals in May

The method, which was first introduced in 2010 and recently explained by DJ Rafik, is a crucial breakthrough in tone playing. As 69Beats points out in his video, it is impossible to play certain melodies with traditional DJ controllers due to a limited amount of pads. That, combined with the fact that not all songs are in the same key, has resulted in a prevalence of out-of-tune tone play routines, a topic of criticism in the DJ community.

The technique is also possible with Serato DJ via the Pitch ‘n Time plug-in, as explained in a recent episode of DJcityTV’s Tips & Tricks.
