Deorro and MAKJ Drop New Track, ‘Ante Up’

Deorro

Last August, Deorro and MAKJ joined forces for an electro house heater titled, “READY!” The track became a festival favorite and currently has over 3,000,000 SoundCloud plays.

Now, nearly a year later, the California natives have returned with another hard-hitter: “Ante Up.” The song is pretty much what you’d expect from Deorro and MAK except for one big difference: it contains a sample of M.O.P.’s hip-hop anthem from 2000 of the same title.

For those who don’t know, M.O.P. is a respected hip-hop duo from New York that collaborated with DJ Premier in the ’90s and ’00s. Their 2000 single, “Ante Up,” achieved mainstream success and is now a classic of the era. Considering that MAK is returning to his roots as an open-format DJ, it makes sense that he’d flip a track from a group like M.O.P.

MAKJ Delivers Open-Format Mix for ‘Diplo and Friends’

About a month ago, we sat down with MAKJ to talk about his background and love for open-format DJing. The west coast native lived up to his words, though, by dropping a versatile mix for his debut on BBC Radio 1Xtra’s “Diplo and Friends” last night.

With over 40 tracks from various genres and eras, MAK’s mix is quite a bit different from the big room and electro house sets that many fans know him for. In fact, his selection includes more hip-hop than dance music.

“This is a huge hodgepodge of my past and current plethora of music,” MAK said when introducing himself on the show. Indeed, with everything from Fetty Wap and Damian Marley to Alesso and Beck, MAK’s mix has a little something for everyone.

Oh, and it also includes unreleased material from DJ Snake, Deorro, and Timmy Trumpet.

Most people think of MAKJ as an electro house artist, but the California native is an open-format DJ at heart and cut his teeth opening for genre-benders like AM and Vice. A prime example of MAK’s versatility was his performance at this year’s Ultra Music Festival. To close his set, he brought out rapper O.T. Genasis to perform “CoCo” for unsuspecting EDM fans.

And as the lines between hip-hop and dance music continue to blur, MAK is set on showing the world that he can not only mix multiple genres, but also produce them.

DJcityTV’s Styles Davis spoke with MAK at Los Angeles’ Icon Collective Music Production School about his love for open-format DJs and his new musical direction. He also played an unreleased song which can be heard exclusively in the interview below.

MAKJ Urges DJs to Produce Their Own Music

DJ Mag caught up with rising DJ/producer MAKJ who was just ranked sixty-third in their controversial Top 100 poll. Albeit brief, his interview contains a golden piece of advice to up-and-coming DJs and producers.

“I was in this position that I was a DJ before I started producing music and once I started producing music, the rest was kind of history. My ability to go travel the world and have fans that came to see me for my music instead of just for my DJ abilities was surpassed the amount of respect I could’ve gotten doing anything else. So definitely, produce your own music, don’t be a DJ.”

While there’s plenty of successful DJs out there who don’t produce, MAK’s advice comes as folks look to differentiate themselves in an increasingly over-saturated market. Adding production to your arsenal can only help, and in MAK’s case, jump-start your career and propel you into the DJ Mag’s Top 100.
