A-Trak Digs Deep for ‘Diplo and Friends’ Mix

If there’s one thing you can expect from an A-Trak mix, it’s music you haven’t heard before. On Saturday night, the Fool’s Gold Records boss stayed true to that reputation with an outstanding mix for BBC Radio 1XTra’s “Diplo and Friends” show. The 60-minute session featured a variety of styles, including exclusives, and overlooked gems from emerging artists. The former DMC World Champion also threw in a little scratching to remind folks he’s still down with the #RealDJing movement.

Los Angeles DJ/producer TOKiMONSTA is a legend in her hometown and has seen increasing global success in recent years. Last weekend, the Southern California native delivered a stand-out mix for BBC Radio 1Xtra’s “Diplo and Friends,” her second appearance on the show. TOKi’s 60-minute set featured a bunch of new music, including plenty of her own edits and remixes.

Listen to Tchami’s Mix for ‘Diplo and Friends’

Diplo always says good things when introducing the guests for his BBC Radio 1 show, but last night’s opening words for French DJ/producer Tchami was more like a declaration:
 

“He looks set to bring future house to the masses in 2015 … If you haven’t heard of him, you’re gonna hear from him now on. Promise.”

 
For those who haven’t heard of him and don’t want to wait for Mr. Mad Decent’s prediction to come true, we’ll break it down for you.
 
Tchami is one of the leading figures in “future house” — a forward-thinking and soulful style that, as Diplo put it, “is kinda the dopest music out there right now.” Ironically, the term itself started out as a joke, as the Parisian revealed during a recent interview with Stoney Roads. The phrase caught on though, and so has Tchami’s distinctive sound.
 
The Frenchman’s breakout came in summer 2013 with the release of his remix of Janet Jackson’s classic, “Go Deep.” The track was then followed by a debut EP on Fool’s Gold Records and a string of impressive releases, including an original titled “Untrue” and remixes of Martin Garrix, A Tribe Called Quest, AlunaGeorge, and Mercer. His most recent offering, a soulful rework of Oliver $ & Jimi Jules’ “Pushing On,” has received nearly two million SoundCloud plays and peaked at #10 on DJcity.
 
Tchami has also performed at some of the world’s biggest festivals this year, including EDC Las Vegas, TomorrowWorld, and most recently HARD Day of the Dead.
 
Which brings us to last night’s mix for “Diplo and Friends.” While Tchami’s one-hour session was built around the style he’s become known for, the sound wasn’t limited to future house and included occasional tempo changes. With creative selection and plenty of new music, it’s safe to say one of the most anticipated mixes of the year lived up to the hype.

DMC Champion DJ Swamp Drops Halloween Mix for ‘Diplo and Friends’

Former DMC US Champion DJ Swamp put down a one-of-a-kind Halloween mix for BBC Radio 1Xtra’s “Diplo and Friends” show Saturday night.
 
“I don’t think any other DJ in the world embodies Halloween-crazy-scariness like the one and only DJ Swamp,” Diplo said during the show’s introduction. “This guy is a crazy insane lunatic shocking amazing true inspiration.”
 
Swamp’s selection featured an hour of bass-heavy bangers blended with classic rock tracks. While his style might not be for everyone, his unique approach and craftsmanship are worth the listen alone.

DJ Premier Delivers 60 Minute Mix for Diplo & Friends

It’s currently hip-hop month at BBC Radio 1Xtra and what better way to celebrate than with a mix from the legendary DJ Premier? Well, that’s exactly what Diplo & Friends did last weekend in what the Mad Decent head honcho said was “a long time coming.”
 
Despite what many would expect, the majority of the mix features rock songs from classic artists such as The Doors, Steve Miller, and Heart, followed by 90s favorites from the likes of Alice in Chains and Rage Against the Machine. All of the rock tunes have a groove and Premo cuts and juggles throughout.
 
Of course, there couldn’t be a Premo mix without hip-hop and the New York native made sure to include tracks by artists such as Nas, M.O.P., Joell Ortiz, Showbiz, among others.
