MAKJ Delivers Open-Format Mix for ‘Diplo and Friends’

MAKJ
MAKJ at Stardium Festival in Seoul, South Korea on July 4. (WO2YA)

About a month ago, we sat down with MAKJ to talk about his background and love for open-format DJing. The west coast native lived up to his words, though, by dropping a versatile mix for his debut on BBC Radio 1Xtra’s “Diplo and Friends” last night.

With over 40 tracks from various genres and eras, MAK’s mix is quite a bit different from the big room and electro house sets that many fans know him for. In fact, his selection includes more hip-hop than dance music.

“This is a huge hodgepodge of my past and current plethora of music,” MAK said when introducing himself on the show. Indeed, with everything from Fetty Wap and Damian Marley to Alesso and Beck, MAK’s mix has a little something for everyone.

Oh, and it also includes unreleased material from DJ Snake, Deorro, and Timmy Trumpet.

Watch Krept & Konan Cover ‘Mo Money Mo Problems’ with Live Band

Rising hip-hop duo Krept & Konan stopped by BBC Radio 1Xtra this week and covered The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Mo Money Mo Problems” with a live band.

Though they’ve been a group since 2009, it wasn’t until their Jeremih-assisted single “Freak of the Week” that the London rappers really took off. The dancehall-influenced song, which features production from DJ Mustard, was the second most-downloaded track in May on DJcity, and in June they signed a deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing UK.

Watch their performance above, and grab “Freak of the Week” and its remixes on DJcity.

Watch OMI Perform ‘Cheerleader’ on BBC Radio 1Xtra

Jamaican singer OMI recently performed his reggae-pop hit “Cheerleader” on BBC Radio 1Xtra’s “Live Lounge.”

A remix of the song by German DJ/producer Felix Jaehn has gone number one in over a dozen countries and is quickly gaining momentum in the US.

Last week, Shazam’s VP of Product Cait O’Riordan said that “Cheerleader” will be Billboard’s next number one hit. Billboard’s data supports the prediction, too, as the track has jumped from number 95 to number 63 in just two weeks on the Hot 100 chart.

On Friday, Germany’s ESKEI83 put down a 26-minute mix for Charlie Sloth’s BBC Radio 1Xtra show. The Red Bull Thre3style World Champion’s set featured a variety of bass-heavy tracks, including some of his own productions. Of course, ESKEI couldn’t drop a mix without flexing his world-class turntablism skills, so there’s plenty of cutting sprinkled throughout, too.
