Is Sync the End of DJing? DJ Jazzy Jeff Answers at Red Bull 3Style VIII
During a judges panel at the Red Bull 3Style VIII in Poland, DJcity’s Styles Davis asked DJ Jazzy Jeff if “sync was the end of DJing.”
The legend didn’t hold back.
“Technology doesn’t have sh#t to do with DJing,” Jeff said without hesitation. “Don’t f#cking use it if you don’t want to use it. But if you want to use it, use it.”
“I think people stopped realizing that the reason why you DJ is for them people out there to have a good time. They don’t give a f#ck about a sync button. … They don’t worry about what kind of equipment you use.”
Jeff concluded: “I’m tired of people complaining about the wrong sh#t. Play good music and stop worrying about a f#cking sync button.”

Red Bull 3Style Travels to the Polish Mountains
On Tuesday, this year’s Red Bull 3Style contestants and judges took a day trip to Zakopane, Poland, a popular area known for winter sports. They got on two busses and drove two hours to a mountain named Kasprowy Wierch.
After hanging out on the slopes, they had dinner at a local restaurant that served traditional Polish cuisine. They then took a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the forest to a campfire where a local Polish folk band greeted them.

Annie Mac Addresses Cell Phone Usage in Clubs

Annie Mac. (Source: Facebook)
In 2017, Annie Mac presented Who Killed The Night?, a BBC Three documentary which explores the controversies around the closure of almost half of the UK’s clubs over the past ten years. In a recent interview with Music Week, the BBC Radio 1 host discussed how the modern obsession with cell phones is damaging the clubbing experience. She also offered a potential solution.
Mac, who recently went on a tour for the first time in two years, noticed a “distinct difference,” among club goers.
“That difference was phones – it was next level. Everything had to be recorded on people’s phones, or they were asking me to take selfies… It was constant phones in my face.” she told Music Week. “I feel like that’s a really big problem in terms of clubbing now, because the ultimate idea and goal of clubbing is to connect…”
As for a possible solution, Mac used New York’s Output and Berlin’s Berghain nightclubs’ no photos or videos policy as an example:
“You’re either not allowed to bring your phone in, which I think is a bit extreme, or they put a sticker over your screen so that you can’t take photos,” she said. “I think what will happen moving forward is that it will become the thing to not have a phone in a club. I hope it will become the norm – I think that would be really good for clubbing in general.”

Carlo Atendido Launches DJ Lifestyle Series on DJcityTV
DJ Carlo Atendido, a two-time Red Bull 3Style Philippines champion, has launched a series on DJcityTV called DJ Life. The series offers a glimpse into Carlo’s life as a traveling DJ.
Based in Manila, Carlo burst onto the scene in 2014 when he took third place at the Red Bull 3Style world finals in Azerbaijan. Only Ireland’s DJ Flip and champion Eskei83 finished ahead of him. He has since taken his world-class DJ skills around the globe, which he vlogs about on his YouTube channel.
In the first episode, Carlo heads to the city of Bacolod in the Philippines for a gig he had booked over a year ago. Understandably, he forgets what the gig entails and travels to the show not knowing what to expect. Carlo documents the humorous lead-up to his set, including an attempt to perform a soundcheck where there is no equipment for him to use.

Do You Back Up All of Your Files?
There’s one phrase that should never get old for a DJ: “back up your files.” While it may sound redundant, there are still a number of DJs who haven’t taken the time to protect their music collection. On this episode of DJcityTV’s Share the Knowledge, DJ TLM reminds DJs why it’s crucial to back up all of their files and offers some tips on how to do so.
