When it comes to the world of turntablism, the UK’s DJ Woody is a scientist of sorts. Having co-developed the Vestax Controller One back in 2001, the award winner has since dedicated himself to pushing the limits of what can be done with turntables and mixers.

One of Woody’s latest discoveries is “polyphonic scratching.” Using Serato DJ and Rane’s Sixty-Four mixer, the Englishman has discovered a way to control up to four independent sound sources using just one turntable. The innovation enables him to play chords and independent melodies.

“The technique opens up [a] whole new creative door for turntablism,” Woody says. “I’m still learning and discovering the new skill set required for polyphonic scratching. Needless to say, this video is just the starting point.”

DJ Woody Pays Tribute to BB King with Scratch Routine

Award-winning turntablist DJ Woody has paid tribute to legendary blues musician B.B. King with a scratch routine based on his number one hit, “You Upset Me Baby.” The 89-year-old blues master passed away on Thursday night after battling health problems.

B.B. King was arguably one of the most influential musical figures of the 20th century, having inspired countless blues and rock guitarists. His impact on hip-hop music is notable too, as dozens of his recordings have been sampled throughout the years. King also collaborated with fellow Mississippian Big K.R.I.T. on the rapper’s 2012 song, “Praying Man.”

“Needle dropping” is a technique in which a DJ drops the stylus at the exact point where he wants playback to begin without previously cueing the record. The method was pioneered by Grand Wizzard Theodore in the 1970s and is still used to this day.

And while there’s been numerous routine videos of turntablists showcasing their scratching and juggling skills in recent years, videos of DJs needle dropping have been less frequent due to the increased use of DVS such as Serato and Traktor.

Which leads us to DJ Woody, an award-winning turntablist who prides himself on being a true student of the game. In his aptly-titled video, “Just Plain Ill,” the English DJ takes a minute of his time to flex his needle dropping skills. Watch the minute-long clip above.

Award-winning turntablist DJ Woody is back with a new routine video. This time around, Woody cuts with one of his own instrumentals, which contains a sample of Da Bush Babees’ underground track, “The Love Song.” Note that Woody uses the Vestax Controller One — a turntable he helped develop with D-Styles, Teeko, Mike Boo, DJ Excess and Ricci Rucker.

DJ Woody’s “I Got Styles” video was one of the most-watched scratch routines on DJcity in 2014. The visuals were pretty basic, though, and now the award-winning turntablist has returned with a better-looking version filmed in his hometown of Manchester, England.

The video is part of Macho Zapp’s “Scratch Obsession” — a unique multimedia experience that explores the world of turntablism.

According to the site, Woody’s routine consists of 485 individual movements of the crossfader and 333 movements of the vinyl.
