Watch: DJ Brace and Asian Hawk Join Forces on Routine

Asian Hawk and DJ Brace

DJ Brace and Asian Hawk, two of the world’s most innovative turntablists, have joined forces on a routine for DJcityTV.

While this is their first time working together, both DJs are veterans of the battle scene. Brace is a three-time DMC world champion and Asian Hawk has claimed five UK DMC titles.

With only twelve hours to put together a routine, the duo created a soulful, R&B-tinged song. Asian Hawk combined singing and finger drumming, while Brace played a melody by scratching with the Fretless Fader.

In 2017, DJ Brace traveled to China to explore its culture. The former DMC Online champ recorded sounds from the cities he visited and made beats out of them. He then filmed himself scratching over the instrumentals.

Continuing his Culture Cuts series, Brace recently traveled to Panama. There, he met with members of the Garifuna tribe from Belize, sampled them playing guitars and percussion, and composed a beat with the sounds. The next day, he led a performance with them in the jungle at the Tribal Gathering festival.

During a recent visit to Los Angeles, DJ Brace stopped by DJcity’s studio to film a new episode of his Fretless Fridays series. The three-time DMC Online champ scratched over his remix of Kutiman’s “She’s a Revolution” featuring Adam Scheflan and Karolina using the Fretless Fader.

Developed by John Beez, the Fretless Fader is a crossfader that’s mounted on a rail, enabling DJs to control the pitch with up and down movement.

Three-time DMC Online champion DJ Brace has released Apatheia, his third solo studio album. Issued on Fat Beats Records, it blends his world-class turntablism with instrumental hip-hop and thought-provoking samples.

World-renowned turntablist DJ Woody described the project on Fat Beats’ website:

“Combining equally accomplished prowess on the boards as on the turntables, Brace’s new album Apatheia is beautifully executed. The nine atmospheric soundscapes gel together with great cohesion resulting in a rewarding listen from start to finish. Evoking the best output of labels such as Mo’ Wax and Ninja Tune, Apatheia is a must listen!”

Brooklyn-based MC Soul Khan also praised the album: “Apatheia reaffirms that DJ Brace’s work belongs in the same tier as DJ Shadow or RJD2, but with a style and trajectory all his own.”
