Daddy Yankee’s Anthem ‘Dura’ Gains Momentum

After two decades in the game, Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee shows no signs of slowing. Though he’s consistently had hits in the Latin world since the 2000s, his and Luis Fonsi‘s 2017 smash “Despacito” took him — and Latin music — to new heights.

Now, with the world watching the Latin scene, Yankee has returned with a new single called “Dura.” Unlike “Despacito,” “Dura” is reminiscent of the earlier days of reggaeton. Its simple yet rhythmic production and catchy hook have made it a viral dance craze.

And the numbers show it. “Dura” debuted at No. 13 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart earlier this week and currently sits at No. 10 on DJcity’s Hot Box chart. With its early success and Latin music’s exploding popularity, “Dura” has the potential to be the next crossover hit, especially if it receives a high-profile remix.

Malaysia Bans ‘Despacito’ From Government-Run Stations

Despacito

Malaysia has banned Luis Fonsi‘s smash hit “Despacito” from government-run radio and TV stations.

The country’s Communications Minister Salleh Said Keruak told CNNMoney:

“The song was filled with numerous sexual references and innuendos and thus wholly inappropriate to be aired by our national media outlets for our general public, especially children.”

Salleh also told the Associated Press that the ban does not affect the Justin Bieber remix, and only applies to government-run stations, not private outlets or streaming services.

“Despacito” has become the first Spanish-language song to reach number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in over 20 years. The original and the remix together are the most streamed track of all time with over 4.6 billion plays, according to Billboard.
