The Latest Sound from Down Under

JDG
JDG performs at FriBays in Mornington, Australia.

In the past two years, Melbourne bounce has stormed into clubs like shoppers at Best Buy on Black Friday. Thanks to off-beat basslines, dirty Dutch-style melodies and bending synths, bounce has catapulted artists like Will Sparks, Joel Fletcher, Deorro, and TJR onto main stages at the world’s biggest festivals.

Australia is a hotbed for other innovative production styles, too, and one of them is just now emerging. Drawing from bounce and minimal house, the sound combines ’80s-style basslines with airy vocal leads that result in a unique dynamic of bass and treble. Midway through, ghostly drops give way to extended trance-style breakdowns, similar to progressive house.

Plenty of producers have expanded on bounce in the past, but there’s a consistency in this movement that separates it. Some people call the style “meltrance” or “kick-bass,” but we think it’s too early to justify a new genre name. One thing’s for sure though — it’s an evolution of bounce and something to definitely keep an eye on.

Calvin Harris’ ‘Outside’ Receives Trap Remix from Marshmello

DJcity has added over a dozen remixes of Calvin Harris’ “Outside” since the single dropped, but Marshmello’s is only the second trap version in our catalog. Besides a completely new drum pattern, his 71 BPM remix speeds and pitches up Ellie Goulding’s vocals. “Outside” is also currently number two on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, so Marshmello’s rework is a nice alternative for those who’ve overplayed the original.
