‘Rubble Kings’ Mixtape Features the Sounds That Inspired Hip-Hop

Rubble Kings

To celebrate the release of the Rubble Kings documentary, SiriusXM’s Sammy Needlz has joined forces with Rok One, DJ Tahleim, and the film’s director Shan Nicholson on a mixtape inspired by the film.

The documentary is about New York City during the late ’60s and early ’70s when gangs ruled the streets. It chronicles the story of a few extraordinary people who brought peace to their gang-ridden streets and gave birth to hip-hop culture.

The 55-minute Rubble Kings mix features a diverse selection of music — from the “anthemic soul and funk of the Black struggle, to the salsa and Boogaloo of the Latin Barrios, to the gritty and abrasive psychedelic rock of White gangland.”

Many of the songs in the mix were originally intended to appear on the documentary’s soundtrack but were omitted for various legal and budgetary reasons. Now, for the first time ever, fans can hear the songs that were originally intended for the film.

Stream the mix below and download it on the Rubble Kings website.

Documentary Explores the Golden Era of New York Radio

In addition to their huge collection of lectures with influential hip-hop, funk, and electronic artists, Red Bull Music Academy also makes high-quality documentaries.

One of our favorites is a piece about the golden era of New York radio titled, “Revolutions On Air.” The 17-minute video, which was uploaded back in April, tells the story of the DJs who helped make hip-hop a worldwide phenomenon and paved the way for today’s urban contemporary radio.

Hosted by MC Lyte, the documentary features commentary from legends like Marley Marl, Kool DJ Red Alert, Stretch Armstrong, and DJ Spinna. It is a must-watch for anyone interested in the development of hip-hop and urban radio.
