Charli XCX Lands Billboard Cover Story

Charli XCX

British singer-songwriter Charli XCX first came to mainstream prominence in 2012 when she sang on Icona Pop’s crossover anthem, “I Love It.” Two years later, the 22-year-old was featured on an even bigger hit — Iggy Azalea’s ubiquitous “Fancy” — the first number one single for both artists.

In June, Charli proved that she’s capable of achieving mainstream success on her own with the release of “Boom Clap” — a single that’s received 56 million YouTube plays and a peak position of eight on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Her latest single, “Break the Rules,” is quickly gaining momentum and could become her next hit.

With all the recent success, it makes sense that Billboard chose the British pop star as their October 2014 cover story.

5 Deep House-Influenced Songs You Might’ve Missed

MK

When it comes to the deeper side of dance music, the UK is often ahead of the curve compared to the US. For example, deep house-influenced hits such as Disclosure’s “Latch,” Kiesza’s “Hideaway,” Route 94’s “My Love” and Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be” were all chart-toppers in the UK long before American audiences first heard them on the radio.

While we can’t say for certain what the next hit will be, DJcity spoke with five influential DJs from around the UK to find out which tracks are currently getting the most love at their gigs.

Wankelmut & Emma Louise – My Head Is A Jungle – MK Remix

“MK chopped this just right to give the vocals a catchy hook. He also kept it interesting throughout thanks to classic house chords on the keys and plenty of breakdowns.”
Satoru, Newcastle

Oliver $ & Jimi Jules – Pushin’ On – Tchami Remix

“Tchami is killing it with his crossover EDM and deep sound, which gets deep house fans shuffling while at the same time maintains a fist pumping atmosphere. Everyone in the club sings out loud even though nobody quite knows the words.”James HYPE!, Liverpool

Ten Walls – Walking With Elephants

“A massive summer anthem that’s a must-have for any house DJ no matter what kind of set your playing.”DJ S.K.T, London

Huxley – Inkwell

“The Drop on this tune is no joke! It absolutely kills the club everywhere I play it!”
Colin Francis, London

Braxton – Next To Me

“Crazy drop. High-energy. When the bass drops after the filter…wow, you know about it. With a familiar Ashanti vocal sample, you can play this track in the most commercial set and it’s guaranteed to go off.”Jerome Price, Leicester/Newcastle
