A-Trak: ‘It’s Cool to Be Weird Now’

A-Trak recently spoke with Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning show about the open-format mission behind his Fool’s Gold label and Day Off festival.

“As DJs, my partner Nick Catchdubs and I, we wanted to create a label that stood for what we play in our sets, which is not just one thing,” A-Trak told Ebro. “The whole idea of mixing up hip-hop releases and electronic releases, it just felt like it hadn’t been done at the time.”

He also said the rise of open-format DJing in the late-2000s influenced the label’s creation.

“In our DJ scene everything was mixing up again, so as a label, we went that same route of mixing stuff up again. Our events reflect that [diversity] too. And Day Off has really turned into an actual festival, it’s more than just a show.”

Though the idea of blending genres wasn’t mainstream when Fool’s Gold launched in 2007, A-Trak said that today’s fans are more eclectic than previous generations.

“I think that everybody listens to more than just one thing. It’s not like back in the day in the ’90s either you listened to Joy Division or you listened to BDP or KRS-One. Those crowds didn’t really [mix].”

Lil’ Troy’s “Wanna Be a Baller” still gets played in clubs from time to time, but a twerk remix from Made Monster breathes new life into the southern hip-hop classic.

The duo, which is comprised of Los Angeles’ DJ Spryte and Houston’s DJ Red, took the original acapella and placed it over an entirely new and supercharged instrumental.

Panasonic Announces New Technics Turntable

Panasonic revealed today that they are reviving the Technics turntable, Wired UK reports.

The announcement was made at the annual IFA trade show in Berlin where the company presented a prototype of a new direct-drive turntable.

According to Wired, the turntable will be designed with the SL-1200 and the SP10 in mind and be made from stark aluminium.

The Technics SL-1200 line was discontinued in 2010 even though it has been an industry standard for years. Many DJs still use them, and companies like Pioneer and Reloop have made models inspired by the SL’s legendary design and durability (the PLX-1000 and RP-8000, respectively).

“Turntables are a very iconic product for the Technics brand,” Michiko Ogawa, director of Technics and executive officer at Panasonic, told Wired. “It is important to show our sincere dedication [to that]. The turntable market is very small but it is a very important brand product.”

Details regarding the price and release date have yet to be released.

Review: Reloop RMX-22i Mixer

Reloop’s RMX-22i mixer is somewhat invisible in the DJ equipment market. This is because beginners often prefer controllers and professionals usually go for high-end mixers from Rane or Pioneer. As a result, there is a gap in the market that most people don’t pay attention to: the mid-range mixer.

There are some solid products in this $300 to $500 price range, though, and the RMX-22i is one of the best. Don’t get it twisted — unlike Thud Rumble’s new TRX battle mixer, the RMX-22i is a general purpose product that’s suitable for a wide audience.

Red Hot Chili Peppers’ ‘Can’t Stop’ Remixed by Kid Cut Up and Jason Edward

DJcity’s Kid Cut Up has provided us with dozens of exclusive edits and bootlegs over the last year. One of the latest, a blend of Jidenna’s “Classic Man” and Major Lazer’s “Lean On,” was the thirtieth most downloaded track on DJcity in August.

The Milwaukee native is expanding his horizons, though, and recently teamed up with Jason Edward on a remix of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Can’t Stop.” Cut Up has dropped remixes before, but his twerked-out version of the 2002 hit marks the beginning of an effort to release more of them.

Edward, like Cut Up, has also seen success on DJcity. His remix of “The Next Episode” with Dani Deahl was the thirteenth most downloaded track on DJcity in May.

Stream their remix below and download it on DJcity.
