Effective Scratches for Mixing Into Songs


 
Washington, D.C.-based DJ school, the Beat Refinery, is back with a new Learn to DJ tutorial video. This time, Red Bull Thre3style Washington, D.C. Runner-Up DJ As-One explains how to use scratching to mix into songs, as opposed to using scratching as a lead. The techniques discussed in the episode are the “stab” and “scribble.”

Voting for the eighth round of the DMC Online DJ Championship is underway and one of the entries that caught our attention is by DJ As-One. Watch above as the Washington, DC turntablist throws down his two-minute routine while wearing a DJcity shirt — and a wig.

For the second installment of the Beat Refinery’s “Learn to DJ” series, DJ As-One explains how to combine basic scratches to form complex and advanced ones. The techniques used in this video are the “baby scratch” and the “chirp scratch.”
 
As-One is DMC Washington, D.C. Champion and Red Bull Thre3style Washington, D.C. Runner-Up. He was featured in DJcity’s “Cutting Room” series in 2013.

Two weeks ago, party rocker and turntablist As-One went up against Trayze, Jeyone, Yurz Truly and Petey Complex at the Red Bull Thre3style Washington, D.C. Qualifier. While Trayze ended up taking the crown, As-One delivered an impressive routine and was named vice champion. Now that the battle is over, the D.C. native has uploaded his Thre3style application video, which was responsible for getting him into the competition.
 
The Thre3style USA Championships are set to take place this April in Phoenix, Arizona.
