Facebook Signs Licensing Deal With Warner Music Group

Facebook

Facebook

Facebook has signed a “holistic” licensing agreement with Warner Music Group (WMG), according to a press release from the label. The deal means that Facebook is now partners with three major music companies, the others being Universal Music Group (UMG) and Sony/ATV.

The agreement will allow users to “create, upload and share videos with licensed music” from WMG’s catalog across Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and Oculus.

Like the UMG and Sony deals, DJs and producers should be free to upload videos of their mixes, remixes, and routines that contain music from the label.

WMG’s family of labels includes Atlantic Records, Warner Bros. Records, and Parlophone. Their roster includes Skrillex, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Uzi Vert, PartyNextDoor, Cardi B, and Ed Sheeran. They also control the catalogs of giants like the Wu-Tang Clan and Linkin Park.

WMG did not specify when users will be able to start using their content.

Warner/Chappell Global Digital Strategy EVP Eric Mackay said in the press release:

“The team at Facebook is creating a truly innovative product and is showing real commitment to its participation in the growth of the music business. We’ve taken our time to arrive at the best possible deal, one that recognises the value that music creates on social networks, while empowering our songwriters to reach audiences around the world.”

WMG Chief Digital Officer Ole Obermann added:

“Our partnership with Facebook will help expand the universe of music streaming and create supplementary revenue for artists. Fan-created video is one of the most personal, social and often viral ways that music is enjoyed, but its commercial potential is largely untapped.”

Tropkillaz Recruit Aloe Blacc for New Anthem, ‘Milk & Honey’

Tropkillaz

Brazilian DJ/producer duo Tropkillaz have dropped their highly anticipated new single featuring Aloe Blacc, “Milk & Honey.”

It’s the lead track off the group’s upcoming debut album and marks a change of pace from their usual bass-heavy style to a more pop-driven sound.

As its name suggests, “Milk & Honey” is about working hard to achieve success. “I think many people can identify with the song,” Tropkillaz member Laudz said in the press release. “The song deals with hustling, a rags to riches mentality and improving your life — which is a priority for many, regardless of where they come from.”

Watch: Turntablists Put New Phase Technology to Test on DJcityTV’s ‘Cutting Room’ Series

Phase

While in Poland for the Red Bull 3Style VIII World Finals, DJcityTV recruited some of the country’s best turntablists to showcase the new Phase technology on its Cutting Room series.

Premiered at NAMM in January, Phase is a wireless device that bypasses a turntable’s internal audio and eliminates the need for a cartridge. It is considered by many industry experts and DJs to be a potential game-changer in the industry.

The scratch session featured DJs VaZee, Eprom, Krootki, Falcon1, and Keeper ET, and used Fracture’s jungle single, “Loving Touch.” It was the follow up to DJcityTV’s first Polish Cutting Room session, which went down in 2014.

Entries have opened for the inaugural AhhYeah Amplify DJ Championship for Northeastern U.S. DJs. The winner will receive prizes valued at more than $3,000.

Formerly called the Weekday Warriors DJ Battle, Peavey has relaunched the competition to reach a larger audience. It will be put on by DJ collective AhhYeah and co-sponsored by DJcity.

There will be three rounds: an online qualifier, three regional battles, and a final. The competitors will be judged on technical ability, song selection, crowd reaction, and originality. In a unique twist, crowd reaction will be determined by the number of social media “likes” a DJs’ video gets in the qualifier round.

27 finalists from the qualifier round will be selected on March 26 (nine from the New York City region, nine from the New Jersey region, and nine from the Philadelphia region).

The regional battles will take place from April to July. The NYC competition, which will take place on April 22, will be judged by DJcity’s East Coast Director Latin Prince as well as DJs Mell Starr, Esquire, Cypress Hill’s Eddie B. Swift, and GetLive!

The final is set to take place in New Jersey in September.

To enter the qualifier round, DJs must submit a two to five-minute video on Ahhyeah’s website by March 18. A full list of rules and details can be found there.

Watch the trailer below and stay tuned for more announcements.
