Kendrick Lamar: ‘I want to be known as a leader’

Kendrick Lamar

In a series of Q&A videos recently uploaded to his Vevo account, Compton-born rapper Kendrick Lamar spoke on a wide range of topics, including his thoughts on the current state of hip-hop and how he wants to be remembered.

“I want to be known as somebody that was a leader in a city and followed no rules — and put people that was under me in a situation where they can do better for themselves instead of following the same lasting cycle.”

He also praised Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine, Interscope, Aftermath, and Top Dawg Entertainment for giving him creative freedom:

“I’m in a blessed position — creatively — to continue doing what I’ve been doing: taking music to the next level and keeping it original — as far as staying true to myself and what I represent and what I want to talk about — and they respect that.”
