Legendary radio personality DJ Skee announced Tuesday evening that he’s quit radio. The resignation was revealed in a heart-felt video (see below) which details his frustration with the industry, and his desire to “promote change.”
“Most listeners are dissatisfied with [radio] due to repetitive playlists, a lack of variety and originality, and the massive amount of commercials. I can’t say that I don’t agree anymore.”
Skee, who’s best known for hosting shows on the US’s biggest station, KIIS FM, and SiriusXM’s Hip-Hop Nation, began his career on the airwaves at age 16. Since then, the Minnesota native has risen through the ranks as a DJ, radio personality, marketing executive, entrepreneur, and most recently, a host on Mark Cuban’s AXS TV.
Despite his strong words about the current state of the industry, Skee kept it classy by thanking those who’ve helped him along the way and acknowledging that radio was instrumental in shaping his career:
“I don’t mean to stand here and bash something that ultimately put me in this position . . . I also want to express how truly thankful I am to everybody that believed in me and gave me opportunities along the way, I’ll forever be grateful.”
He also hinted at his plans for the future:
“I believe there’s a different future for broadcast and that someone needs to come in and save radio. Don’t worry, I’m not going away. I can’t exactly say what I’m doing but I promise you all [that] you’ll see and hear about it very soon.”
If there’s one thing we know about Skee, it’s that he’s one of the most dedicated and hardest working leaders in the industry. It’ll be interesting to see what he has in the works.
