Panasonic has revealed an all-new model of the Technics SL-1200 turntable series: the SL-1200G. The announcement was made on Tuesday at the CES conference in Las Vegas and comes six years after the company discontinued the SL-1200 series.
According to Gizmodo, the “G” model is based on the classic SL-1200 design and contains a key improvement:
“Panasonic and Technics developed a new coreless direct-drive motor that’s lacking the iron core that’s often the cause of those speed fluctuations in the platter. And any remaining vibrations from the turntable’s electric motor are further suppressed and corrected using new processor-controlled rotational positioning sensors inside the SL-1200G’s housing.”
Panasonic also revealed the Grand Class SL-1200GAE, a 50th anniversary limited edition model that will be available in Summer 2016 in a run of 1,200 units. According to Gizmodo, the only advantage of the “GAE” model appears to be “a serial number plate on the base, a magnesium, not aluminum, housing, and early availability.”
