We couldn’t have a Tone Play series without featuring 2013 US Red Bull Thre3style Champion, Trentino! In addition to his top notch scratch abilities, the Chicago native has developed a reputation for creative tone play tricks which took him to last year’s Thre3style world finals. In this episode, Trentino throws down five innovative routines using Novation’s Dicer and an eclectic batch of tracks.
1st routine:
KRS-One – Step into a World (Rapture’s Delight)
Suzanne Vega – Tom’s Diner
Gang Starr – Mass Appeal
2nd routine:
Brenda Russell – Piano In The Dark
Ol’ Dirty Bastard-Shimmy Shimmy Ya
Nas – I Can
2 Chainz – I’m Different
Missy Elliott ft. Ludacris & Trina – One Minute Man
3rd routine:
Maceo & the Macks’s – Soul Power 74
Jagged Edge ft. Nelly – Where The Party At
Fat Boy Slim – Weapon of Choice
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Around the World
4th routine:
Kanye West – New Slaves
Dr. Dre ft. Snoop Dogg – Deep Cover
Tyga ft. Lil Wayne – Faded
Knife Party – LRAD
Nicki Minaj ft. Rick Ross & Cam’ron – I Am Your Leader
Kanye West – Blood on the Leaves
C-Murder ft. Magic & Snoop Dogg – Down 4 My N#ggaz
Isaac Hayes – Ike’s Mood
Vic Mizzy – The Addams Family Theme
The best DJs in the world are creative and differentiate themselves by thinking outside the box. DJcityTV’s Tone Play series sheds light on the technique of seamlessly mixing two tracks together by linking similar tones or melodies. The technique itself isn’t new but has evolved and become increasingly popular in recent years.
