RL Grime Says Trap Has Turned Into a Meme

THUMP recently caught up with rising DJ/producer RL Grime for their Into the Night series.

Grime, who refers to himself as an “instrumental hip-hop producer,” discussed how he feels about the term “trap.”

“It’s sort of turned into a meme at this point,” he said. “The term didn’t just sprout up, and it’s been around forever. It’s just kind of funny that it’s being attributed to these kids making music now, including myself.”

Grime also made a prediction on what the next big sound might be.

“I think there’s gonna be a big movement to 100 BPM-type stuff; it’s gonna kind of veer away from the 70 BPM [style],” he said. “I’ve made a couple tracks that are at that tempo too, and my favorite part of my set is playing that stuff. It’s like twerk music; it’s like hyphy. All the stuff from the west coast that I grew up on.”
