Did Every Country Song Sound the Same in 2014?


 
Over the years, we’ve heard complaints that many mainstream hip-hop songs sound the same. Similar accusations have been made against EDM as well, with the rise of festivals and big room house in recent years.
 
But what about more traditional forms of music such as country? The folks over at Gawker have shared a video (see above) that mashes up six recent pop-country smashes, four of which were released in 2014. “They sound so similar that you can play them on top of each other and lose almost nothing,” the website writes.
 
Here’s a note from the video’s creator:
 
“I just want to be clear that this Mashup is all in good fun. I am not attempting to bash these songs, the artists, or country music in general. I understand and even appreciate why the ‘formula’ continues to dominate the airwaves- not only in country music, but in pop and other genres as well. I simply enjoy mixing and producing on Pro Tools, and when I heard the striking similarities of these particular hits, I thought it would be fun to throw them all in a mix and see what I could come up with. And it looks like people are having fun with it too, so I couldn’t be happier!”
