Pioneer DJ DDJ-1000 Review

T&T

During his time at the Red Bull 3Style World Finals in Poland, Mojaxx hooked up with event sponsor Pioneer DJ for a closer look at their new rekordbox controller, the DDJ-1000.

Debuted in January, the four-channel device features CDJ sized jog wheels with full-color displays, 16 performance pads, and new effects. It also has two USB ports for easy DJ switching and comes with a license for rekordbox.

Mojaxx made good use of his time with the DDJ-1000, giving it the full review treatment for this week’s Tips and Tricks. He even asked some of the world-class DJs in town to throw down some cuts on it. Can it handle their test? Find out above.

The Red Bull 3Style World Finals VIII came to an end on Sunday night in Kraków, Poland. After five days of battles featuring 24 national champions, it was Italy’s Damianito who took home the world championship trophy.

Damianito, who was selected as a wildcard, defeated five competitors in the final round. Belgium’s DJ Cross placed second while Canada’s Cam B rounded out the top three. Chile’s Diego Zapata, South Africa’s Ryan the DJ, and Japan’s RINA also competed. RINA participated as the other wildcard pick while the other DJs had won their respective qualifying rounds.

Each contestant was given 15 minutes to perform a set consisting of at least three genres. They were judged on originality (40%), skills (25%), song selection (20%), and crowd response (15%).

The judges were DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Nu-Mark, Craze, Skratch Bastid, and Nina Las Vegas.

Italy’s Damianito has been crowned the Red Bull 3Style VIII World Champion. The battle took place on Sunday night at the Juliusz Slowacki Theatre in Krakow, Poland.

Damianito delivered an impressive routine despite only finding out Sunday morning that he would be competing in the final as a wild card. He was energetic, pulled off some clean tricks, and creatively used a talk box during his set.

The Rome native, who serves as DJcity’s Italy representative, was left speechless afterward. He simply thanked everyone and said that he had “always imagined” himself being there.

Damianito faced some stiff competition in Belgium’s DJ Cross and Canada’s Cam B, who took second and third place respectively. Also competing were Chile’s Diego Zapata, Japan’s RINA, and South Africa’s Ryan the DJ.

Judging the battle were DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Nu-Mark, Craze, Skratch Bastid, and Nina Las Vegas.

We will share Damianito’s winning set as soon as it becomes available.

Red Bull 3Style

During a judges panel at the Red Bull 3Style VIII in Poland, DJcity’s Styles Davis asked DJ Jazzy Jeff if “sync was the end of DJing.”

The legend didn’t hold back.

“Technology doesn’t have sh#t to do with DJing,” Jeff said without hesitation. “Don’t f#cking use it if you don’t want to use it. But if you want to use it, use it.”

“I think people stopped realizing that the reason why you DJ is for them people out there to have a good time. They don’t give a f#ck about a sync button. … They don’t worry about what kind of equipment you use.”

Jeff concluded: “I’m tired of people complaining about the wrong sh#t. Play good music and stop worrying about a f#cking sync button.”

On Tuesday, this year’s Red Bull 3Style contestants and judges took a day trip to Zakopane, Poland, a popular area known for winter sports. They got on two busses and drove two hours to a mountain named Kasprowy Wierch.

After hanging out on the slopes, they had dinner at a local restaurant that served traditional Polish cuisine. They then took a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the forest to a campfire where a local Polish folk band greeted them.
